Furness Learning provides alternative education opportunities for young people who thrive through curiosity, creativity, and autonomy. We believe learning is most powerful when it is meaningful, experiential, and rooted in strong relationships. Our approach centres on nurturing, supportive environments where young people can explore their interests, build confidence, and rediscover a love of learning through purposeful activity and reflection.

Grounded in Self-Determination Theory, our practice supports the development of autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Learners are encouraged to take ownership of their learning while being supported by skilled adults who provide structure, encouragement, and connection. Whether through our Peer-Supported Learning Community or Guided Learning pathways, Furness Learning helps young people to re-engage with education, build a sense of belonging, and grow as confident, capable, and connected learners.

Democratic Self-directed Learning Community

Our Democratic Self-Directed Learning Community offers a nurturing and empowering alternative to traditional education. It is designed for young people who learn best in flexible, relationship-centred environments where their voice, interests, and choices are genuinely valued. Learning emerges through curiosity, collaboration, and meaningful real-world experiences shaped by the community itself.

Grounded in Self-Determination Theory, the community supports three fundamental psychological needs. Autonomy is honoured through learner choice, shared decision-making, and ownership of learning pathways. Competence develops through experiential projects, problem-solving, and reflective practice that build confidence and a sense of mastery. Relatedness is fostered through strong relationships, mutual respect, and a deep sense of belonging within the group.

Young people actively choose and shape what they learn, individually and collectively, supported by adults who act as facilitators rather than directors. Adults help learners plan, reflect, and make sense of their experiences, while respecting each young person’s pace, interests, and emerging direction. Mixed-age groups and democratic processes encourage cooperation, shared responsibility, and peer support.

This approach blends freedom with responsibility, autonomy with connection, and individual growth with community wellbeing. It offers a meaningful and motivating way for young people to re-engage with learning, develop confidence and purpose, and experience education as something they actively participate in, rather than something imposed on them.

1:1 Guided Learning

Our 1:1 Guided Learning offer provides a one-to-one approach for young people who benefit from individualised support within a relational and flexible learning environment. It mirrors the principles of our Democratic Self-directed Learning Community, creating the same opportunities for autonomy, curiosity, and meaningful learning, but through close guidance and collaboration with an adult facilitator.

Grounded in Self-Determination Theory, 1:1 Guided Learning supports autonomy by enabling each young person to take an active role in choosing and shaping their learning; competence by building confidence, skills, and mastery through experiential and project-based work; and relatedness through the trusting, supportive relationship developed with their facilitator.

Each 1:1 Guided Learning programme is co-created with the young person, using their interests, strengths, and goals to design a purposeful and achievable learning journey. This approach helps young people re-engage with learning, build confidence, and develop a sense of belonging and direction through positive, meaningful experiences.
