Hello
Furness Education Co. has grown from years of learning, hard work and reflection, and is a response to the gap I have seen in the support and education available for young people in and around the Furness area. After several iterations and refinements of the approaches, purpose, and ideas we use, I am now delighted to offer a range of services focused on Nature, Nurture, and Learning to empower young people to thrive.
John Harrington, Founder
Empowering young people to thrive through nature, nurture, and learning.

What makes us unique.
We are a holistic education and wellbeing organisation based in Ulverston, close to Barrow in Furness, Cumbria, supporting the holistic development of young people to become confident, creative, and autonomous individuals who can grow into active citizens in the world.
Our ethos, values and pedagogy are shaped by a range of universal and progressive outlooks that empower young people to become the people they want to be.
The story so far.

Furness Education Co. began its journey in 2016 as Original Adventure, offering bushcraft courses and Forest School programmes for young people in and around Furness. Rooted in outdoor learning and connection to nature, these early experiences helped many participants build confidence, curiosity, and resilience. These early days helped us build experience in delivering high-quality personal development and outdoor learning experiences for young people.

In 2020, the business evolved into Furness Outdoor Learning, continuing to deliver Forest School programmes while expanding into SEMH interventions and a wider range of outdoor learning activities. This period marked a shift towards a more holistic, wellbeing-focused education, recognising the outdoors as a powerful space for personal growth and learning and embracing democratic and self-directed practices in our work.

Today, this growth has led to the creation of Furness Education Co., the home of Furness Nature, Furness Nurture, and Furness Learning — three strands united by one purpose: empowering young people to thrive through nature, nurture, and learning.
